Description
The Wreford Vault, located approximately 10 metres south-east of the chancel of the Church of St Petrock, is a family vault built around 1852 in memory of the Wreford family. Constructed of granite ashlar, the front of the vault is integrated into the east wall of the churchyard, which slopes up to meet the vault on either side. It features a three-bay blind arcade with nowy-headed panels, and the pilasters are supported by granite posts leaning against them. A forward projecting roll cornice runs along the top.
The plot behind the vault is also covered with granite ashlar, which rises in two slightly sloping steps to a concave centre section. The top of the vault is inscribed with lead capital letters set into the granite. The oldest inscription, located at the west end of the centre section, commemorates William Wreford, who died in 1852, along with his two sons, John (1848) and William (1857), and Elina Ward Wreford (1892). To the right, Samuel Wreford (died 1859) is remembered, while to the left, there are inscriptions for John of Nichols Nymet (1846) and another John (died 1864). The vault faces Clannaborough Barton, the 19th-century home of the Wreford family.
