Description

The May Family vault, located approximately 26 metres southwest of the tower of the Church of St Mary, is a family vault dated 1855 belonging to Walter Barton May of Hadlow Castle. It is constructed with a brick facing and sandstone ashlar in a Gothic style. The vault is situated in the northwest corner of the churchyard, with only the eastern long side and southern end visible. It has suffered neglect and has lost some of its original detail.

The structure features angle buttresses at the corners with weathered offsets that rise to finials with panelled sides. A moulded cornice runs at eaves level, topped by a crenellated parapet. On the eastern long side, the parapet rises over a carved coat of arms, while the southern end wall culminates in a low pitch gable with a broken finial. Both sides of the vault contain a row of arch-headed niches beneath a continuous hoodmould, with three niches on the side and two on the end. Only the eastern niches are inscribed; the central one commemorates the death of Walter Barton May in 1855, along with two of his infant sons, while the others record the deaths of additional family members. The vault is enclosed by stone coping that once supported iron area railings.

Walter Barton May was instrumental in much of the work at Hadlow Castle, which is located just beyond the churchyard wall.
