Description
Cheriton Cottage and Lammacott Cottage are two cottages created by dividing a former farmhouse, dating from the 16th or 17th century. They were extensively refurbished in the late 18th to early 19th century, likely at the time of the division. The cottages are constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with stone rubble stacks and plastered chimney shafts, topped by a thatched roof.
The cottages face south-south-east, with Cheriton Cottage on the left (west) and Lammacott Cottage on the right (east). Cheriton Cottage features a two-room plan, consisting of a small unheated room at one end and a larger room with a projecting rear lateral stack. Lammacott Cottage has a one-room plan with an end stack. Although there have been many alterations, it appears that the original farmhouse had a three-room layout with a through-passage. Cheriton Cottage occupies the former inner room and hall, while Lammacott Cottage is situated where the passage and lower-end room were. However, no carpentry details earlier than the late 18th to early 19th century are visible.
The cottages are two storeys tall, with a late 18th to early 19th century agricultural extension on the left end, which is now used for domestic purposes, and secondary outshuts at the rear. The exterior features an irregular five-window front, with late 19th to early 20th century casements that have glazing bars and slightly unusual timber plank hoodmoulds. The former passage front doorway, located to the right of centre, serves Lammacott Cottage and contains a 19th-century plank door with a contemporary hood. The front doorway for Cheriton Cottage is towards the left end and features a 20th-century door with a contemporary thatch-roofed porch. The main roof is half-hipped on the right and gable-ended on the left. An adjoining outbuilding on the left has a 20th-century thatch-roofed porch and a hipped roof.
Inside, the cottages contain plain carpentry details where exposed, including a roof structure supported by A-frame trusses with spiked lap-jointed collars.
