Description

Clannaborough Barton is a large house, believed to have been built in 1801, with architectural features that support this date. The structure is made of plastered cob on rubble footings, with stone rubble stacks topped by 20th-century brick chimney shafts and slate roofs. It has a double depth plan and faces south, consisting of four rooms wide, with the front rooms on each end projecting forward. The entrance hall and rear stairs occupy the full depth to the left of center, while an axial stack backs onto the passage. The right end has an axial stack, and the left end features an outer lateral stack. There are service rooms located in a rear wing, which is listed separately.

The house is two storeys high and has a symmetrical front with a 1:2:1 window bay arrangement, where the left and right sections project. The ground floor crosswings have 20-pane (8/12) sash windows, while the first floor features 16-pane sashes. The main block has two doorways that are 20th-century French windows; the right one includes a 19th-century overlight with margin panes, and there is an outer pair of early 19th-century panelled doors with panelled reveals. A flat lead-roofed five-bay verandah spans the front between the crosswings, supported by granite Doric columns and featuring a plain entablature and granite paved floor. The eaves project on shaped brackets, and the roofs of the crosswings are hipped at each end, with two 16-pane sashes on the first floor of the crosswings. The rear elevation includes a large round-headed sash window with glazing bars for the stairs.

Inside, the house retains much of its original plasterwork, joinery, and chimney-pieces. The entrance hall features a three-bay arcade of elliptical-headed arches with circular-section timber posts, and the open well stair has square-section newels with caps, stick balusters, and shaped stair brackets. Clannaborough Barton was built for the Wreford family and replaced a former mansion located to the north of the nearby Church of St Petrock.
