Description
Stairhill Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th to early 17th century, which was remodeled in the 19th century. It features plastered cob on rubble footings, a volcanic stone stack with a brick chimney shaft, and a thatched roof. The main block faces south and was originally constructed as a three-room-and-through-passage house, with an inner room located at the west end (to the left of the front). There is a front lateral stack serving the hall and a full-height cob partition between the hall and the inner room. In the 19th century, the service end was demolished, and a service block was built to the rear of the passage and hall. The farmhouse has two storeys and a three-window front with 20th-century two-light casements. There is a large stone buttress to the left of the centre and a door at the right end, which is behind a 20th-century glass and weatherboarded porch. The roof is gabled to the left and hipped to the right. The side elevation has a late 19th to early 20th century two-window front with a door at the left end, also behind a 20th-century conservatory. Inside, the hall features a chamfered cross beam with late step stops and a large volcanic ashlar fireplace with an oak lintel that has a similar finish. The roof is inaccessible.
