Description
Bridge House is a late 17th-century building that was originally three cottages and is now a single house. It features plastered cob on rubble footings, with some 20th-century brick, and has rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick. The roof is made of 20th-century concrete tiles, replacing the original thatch. The L-shaped structure has a main range facing southeast, which includes two former cottages that likely shared a doorway, lobby, and stair located just left of center. There is a front lateral stack for the left cottage and gable end projecting stacks for the right cottage and a third cottage behind. The latter has a door at the angle of the two blocks. The front has an irregular arrangement of four windows, featuring 20th-century wooden two-light casements, and a large projecting stack immediately to the left of the door. The 20th-century brickwork around and above the door indicates that this part has been altered. Inside, each room has a chamfered cross beam with straight cut stops, and where visible, there are large stone fireplaces with oak lintels and side ovens. The roof is inaccessible but appears to rest on A-frame trusses. The wide straight flight staircase in the main block and the altered front doorway suggest that the building was used communally and may indicate that the upper rooms were originally intended for separate occupation.
