Description

Westwood Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse, potentially with an earlier core, that was modernised and extended in the mid- to late 19th century. The main block is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with stone stacks featuring 19th-century brick shafts, and a thatched roof. A rear block of plastered rubble and brick has a slate roof. The original plan consisted of three rooms and a through-passage, with an inner room at the north-east end. There are outshots to the rear and a 19th-century block behind the inner room. Rear lateral and gable-end stacks are present. Full-height cob internal partitions are found at the upper end of the hall and on the lower side of the through-passage. A 19th-century entrance hall and stairs were added in the upper end of the hall. The two-storey front has a regular arrangement of six 19th-century windows containing six panes to each light, with glazing bars. A plank door to the original passage was replaced in the 19th century by a six-panel front door with an overlight. Both doors are protected by flat hoods on shaped consoles. The interior reflects the 19th-century modernisation but retains the original layout, suggesting that much of the earlier fabric and detail is concealed. A 17th-century oak door frame at the rear of the passage has an ovolo-moulded surround, and contains a contemporary 12-panel door with iron fittings, including strap hinges with fleur de lys terminals, and an oak lock housing. The hall contains a volcanic ashlar fireplace with a replacement oak lintel and oak A-frame roof with ogee-hollow chamfer moulded crossbeams with scroll stops.
