Description

Combe Lancey Farmhouse, which includes an adjoining cob wall to the south, is a farmhouse with a core dating back to the 16th century, refurbished in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features plastered cob on rubble footings, a rubble stack topped with plastered brick, and a thatched roof. The house has been significantly altered and consists of three rooms with a through passage, facing south, and a service room at the right (east) end. There is a gable-ended stair block at the rear of the hall, likely from the 17th century. Additional service rooms and stores were added to the left, beyond the inner room, in the 18th and 19th centuries. The house has an axial stack at the upper end of the hall and a rear lateral stack for the service room. The front has six windows, which are 20th-century casements of various sizes and irregular placements. The front passage door, located towards the right end, features an overlight and a 20th-century gabled and glass-sided porch. To the left of the centre, there is a secondary 19th-century plank door leading into the former inner room. The roof is gable-ended on the left and hipped on the right. Inside, the farmhouse contains 19th and 20th-century fittings, which likely conceal earlier features. In the hall and inner room, there are exposed cross beams with soffits that have been hacked back. The roof mainly consists of 18th and 19th-century trusses but includes one 16th-century smoke-blackened side-pegged jointed cruck over the upper side of the passage. The property is noted in the Domesday Estate records.
