Description
Kerswell is a keeper's cottage that has been converted into a small house. It is constructed from plastered cob or rubble, featuring exposed volcanic ashlar and brick dressings on the north-west side, and has a rubble stack topped with 19th-century brick. The cottage has a thatched roof and is designed as a two-room double depth house facing south-east, with a central stack and a pyramid roof.
The south-east front includes a door on the right, which is sheltered by a gabled thatched porch supported by rustic timber posts. To the left, there is a projecting square bay window with a thatched roof, containing a 4-light window with ovolo-moulded mullions and a geometric pattern of leaded glass.
On the rear (north-west) side, which overlooks a nearby lake, the exposed volcanic ashlar features two round-headed windows with brick arches. Each of these is a mullion-and-transom window with glazing bars and margin lights. High in the centre of this wall, there are small Beer stone blocks with sunken panels that display heraldic devices in bas-relief. Additionally, there is a coved plaster cornice on this side and the south-west.
