Description
Chapel Downs Farmhouse is an early 18th-century farmhouse, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of plastered rubble or brick, with exposed brick chimney shafts and a slate roof. The house is arranged with a three-room, double-depth plan, incorporating a central staircase. It has projecting end stacks and faces southeast with a symmetrical three-window front. The central entrance features a four-panel door, with the upper panels glazed, set within panelled reveals that project into a Doric doorcase. The doorcase has fluted columns and an entablature with triglyphs, metopes and a cornice soffit with mutules containing drops. Flanking the door are two 25-pane hornless sash windows (10 over 15 panes), with similar windows on the first floor flanking a central 20-pane sash. An eaves cornice is punctuated by shaped brackets. The roof is unusually high, hipped, and extended into gables at a lower level behind tall brick chimney stacks on either side. The alterations of this later period likely account for the eaves cornice being narrower than the front. This period also saw the introduction of the sash windows and the doorcase. Smaller sashes and casements are found at the rear, most with glazing bars. The interior was not inspected at the time of listing.
