Description
This is a fragment of a barn located approximately 2 meters west of Frogbury Farmhouse. It dates from the 18th century and was reduced in size in the 20th century. The structure is partly made of plastered cob and partly of exposed rubble, with some sections clad in 20th-century blockwork and covered with corrugated iron. The roof is also made of corrugated iron, which was originally thatch.
The barn faces east and features opposing doors leading to a threshing floor at the left (south) end. It likely originally extended further to the left and had central doors. At the left end of the front, there are large double doors flanked by short projecting midstrey walls. The barn's floor is elevated compared to the ground level, accessed by an external flight of stone steps. Above the doors, there are a pair of owl holes that probably once supported a hood. The right end wall was rebuilt in the 20th century. The roof consists of three bays supported by 18th-century A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars.
Despite its incomplete state, the barn is a prominent feature in the landscape of the broad valley and forms a group with the nearby Frogbury Farmhouse.
