Description

A terrace of six artisan cottages, likely dating from the late 18th century, is situated on the south side of Park Street, Crediton. The cottages are constructed of rendered cob with thatched roofs, with gable ends. Each has stacks with brick and rendered shafts. The plan of each cottage is one room wide, with a central entrance and a narrow service room at the rear.

The exterior is two storeys. No. 4 has a symmetrical two-window front, featuring a 20th-century plank and cover strip front door flanked by two-light timber casement windows, each with eight panes. The first floor has a three-light casement window in the centre, also with eight panes. No. 5 has a timber front door, similar ground-floor windows, and two first-floor casements corresponding to the ground floor, with a 20th-century window in the centre of the first floor. No. 6 is identical to No. 4, but with a 20th-century timber front door. No. 7 is similar, but with a two-light casement window to the first floor on the left side and a late 20th-century timber front door. No. 8 has been altered, with replaced 20th-century small-pane timber casements in the outer bays. No. 9 retains what appears to be the original arrangement of a single first-floor window in the centre, though it also has replaced timber casements.

The interiors are plain, with no original exposed carpentry. The roofs are said to have pegged A-frames. This is an unusually early vernacular terrace for the region and is said to have been built as weavers’ cottages.
