Description
The cob garden wall to the front garden of Dean View (No 17) is a structure dating from the 16th to late 18th century. It is made of cob and sits on low local volcanic trap footings, topped with red pantile coping, which likely replaced thatch. The wall is approximately 3 meters high and built on a local volcanic stone plinth. The red cob is typical of the Crediton area and remains unrendered. Several similar cob walls can be found in Crediton, especially in East Town around the church. This wall is a significant feature in the streetscape of Dean Street, which includes several early houses and survived the 1743 fire that affected Crediton.
