SANDFORD CHURCH STREET (north side) Sandford Chest-tomb approx. 15m north-west of Church of St Swithun

GV II

Chest-tomb. Circa 1834. Portland stone ashlar with Beer stone panels. Neo- classical. Rectangular in plan on stepped plinth, hollow moulded base and reverse- scrolled pediment with scrolled acroterion on panelled plinth on top of the lid. Each side has a recessed Beer stone panel, each including a shallow sunken panel with double-rebated surround. An inscription on the south face records the death of Percival Swan Esq, an Irish landowner, who died at his residence in Dix's Field, Exeter, in 1834 and the east side has an heraldic achievement in bas-relief.
