Description
This chest-tomb, located approximately 15 meters north-west of the Church of St Swithun, dates from around 1834. It is made of Portland stone ashlar with Beer stone panels and is designed in a Neoclassical style. The tomb has a rectangular shape and sits on a stepped plinth with a hollow moulded base. The lid features a reverse-scrolled pediment topped with a scrolled acroterion on a panelled plinth. Each side of the tomb has a recessed Beer stone panel, which includes a shallow sunken panel with a double-rebated surround. An inscription on the south face commemorates Percival Swan Esq, an Irish landowner who passed away at his residence in Dix's Field, Exeter, in 1834. The east side of the tomb displays a heraldic achievement in bas-relief.
