Description

Sexton's Cottage and Store is an early to mid-19th century building located approximately 35 meters south-west of the Church of St. Swithun in Sandford. It is constructed of volcanic rubble with sandstone lintels and features a volcanic rubble chimney shaft made of 19th-century brick. The building has a slate roof and is small with a gable end, facing south-east, and an end stack that projects from the left (south-west) end.

The structure is two storeys high and has a one-window front. On the first floor, to the left, there is a three-light timber mullioned window, which has two thin iron stanchions per light and a glazing pattern of 21 panes per light, although it currently has no glass. The central light includes a wrought iron casement for 15 panes. To the right, there is a plank door, and a flight of external stone steps with plain iron spear railings leads up to the entrance. The ground floor features a low door that provides access to the store. All openings have plain sandstone lintels that are set proud of the wall surface, which may not be original.

The building is situated in the churchyard, where the ground is much higher than Church Street, making the structure appear as a single storey from the churchyard. There is a similar three-light window on the right (north-east) end of the building. It is built continuously with the churchyard retaining wall. The raised cobbled footpath that runs alongside the front of the building is also included in the listing.
