Description

This is a terrace of three houses located at 2, 3, and 4 St Paul's Square in Tiverton, built around 1860. The architect is unknown, but the houses were constructed for Caroline Brewin, the daughter of John Heathcoat, as part of a development that included houses and a school centered around St Paul's Church, which benefited from the rents of these houses.

The exterior features yellow Flemish bond brick on the front, while the rear elevations are made of stone rubble with brick dressings. The houses have a slate roof that is gabled at the left end, with brick stacks that have platbands and tapering chimneypots. The cast-iron rainwater goods include downpipes that are set into the front wall, and the cast-iron sills are similar to those found on Heathcoat's industrial housing.

The style of the houses is Georgian, and the plan consists of three double-fronted houses with central entrances and end stacks. The buildings are two stories high and have a three-window arrangement for each house. They feature a moulded eaves board and deep boxed eaves. The central round-headed doorways have rusticated quoins and Greek key scratch mouldings on the reveals. The doors are four-panel designs, with Nos 3 and 4 having lower panels that are flush, while No. 2 has a half-glazed door. Simple fanlights with spoke glazing bars are present above the doors, and the windows are 16-pane timber sashes without horns, with the center first-floor sash being a 12-pane design.

The interior has not been inspected but is likely to contain features of interest. This terrace is part of a significant planned development and is linked at the eastern end to No. 26 Church Street.
