Description

No. 14 Wellbrook Street is a working-class or artisan's terrace house that forms the southern end of a uniform block, which includes Nos 2-10 (even) Church Street. It was probably built in 1875-6. The house features a pinkish-yellow brick front with a low chamfered plinth made of squared stone blocks and has a slated roof. There is a large chimney on the left end wall, constructed of the same brick as the front wall but heightened with red brick projecting courses at the top, forming an entablature, and topped with eight spiked pots. The windows have cast-iron sills.

The exterior consists of two storeys and a two-window front, with the doorway located in the right-hand bay of the ground storey. The entrance has a four-panelled door with a cast-iron knocker, where the two lower panels are flush. The reveals and soffit of the arch are wood-panelled, featuring an incised Greek pattern, and there are three-paned fanlights above the door. The windows are topped with flat gauged arches and have barred sashes, with eight panes in the left-hand windows and six panes in the right-hand window of the upper storey. The house is also distinguished by a deeply-projecting, moulded wooden eaves cornice.

Although the interior was not inspected, the house is noted for its external completeness and is part of an important planned group of housing, located adjacent to Heathcoat Hall on Wellbrook Street.
