Description

This building, known as Nos. 1 and 1A St Paul's Square, is a house dating from around 1860. It was originally built for Caroline Brewin, the daughter of John Heathcoat, as part of a group of buildings surrounding St Paul's church. The church was funded by the rents from these houses. No. 1 is adjacent to the school in St Paul's Square and was constructed alongside it.

The house is made of yellow brick laid in Flemish bond, with stone rubble walls at the rear and west end, accented by brick dressings. It has a slate roof and a chimney stack with a brick shaft and crowned chimney pots, along with cast-iron rainwater goods. The building plan features a single room width with the front door located to the left.

The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical two-window front. It includes a round-headed doorway with rusticated quoins and an incised Greek key pattern on the reveals, featuring a four-panel door with flush lower panels and a simple fanlight with spoke glazing bars. The 16-pane timber sash windows, which do not have horns, are set on cast-iron sills, similar to those found in Heathcoat's industrial housing. The right gable end displays deep verges on brackets and features three ground floor high-transomed casements, along with three first-floor 16-pane hornless timber sashes and two similar attic sashes. There are ties at the first-floor level.

The interior has not been inspected but may still contain interesting features. This house is part of a significant planned development from the 1860s.
