Description
The limekilns at ST 057 171 are likely from the early 19th century and are constructed of stone rubble with brick dressings. They consist of a set of three limekilns built against a steep southeast-facing hillside. On the right, there is an oblong block that projects forward, containing two kilns that are raked out from the sides. On the left, another kiln is built into the hillside and is raked out from the front. Each kiln features tall outer arches with a brick segmental arch, which steps down and inwards in a series of three similar arches leading to the raking out hole that connects to a circular brick kiln vat. The kilns could be loaded from the top of the slope. This site is part of a group of limekilns near Westleigh Quarry, which still produces limestone.
