Description
Waytown Tunnel is a tunnel that carries the Grand Western Canal through a ridge, built around 1814. It is constructed from grey-coloured limestone ashlar. At both ends of the tunnel, the canal runs through a deep cutting, while a ridge that once supported the main road to Wellington was left intact, with the tunnel excavated through it. Each end features a low round-headed arch, and the lower sides of the ridge are reinforced with a projecting band across the top. The towpath ramps up to the road on one side and down on the other. Barges were likely pushed through the tunnel by walking along its low roof. This section of the Grand Western Canal was opened in 1814.
