Description

The boundary wall to Glebe House, formerly the vicarage, is likely from the 18th century or earlier, with a carriage and service entrance added around 1840 on the north side. The wall is made partly of Posbury volcanic trap and partly of roughcast, which is probably cob, topped with slate coping. It features a granite archway for the carriage entrance. The wall stands about 3 meters high and curves towards the main entrance of Glebe House on Church Street, where it is built from small squared blocks of stone. This section may be newer than the rest of the wall, which is roughcast on a stone rubble plinth and has a rounded corner at the junction of Church Street and Belle Parade. On the Belle Parade side, north of the house, the wall is gabled above a Gothic Revival moulded granite two-centred archway that leads into the service courtyard of the house. The doorway has a two-leaf plank and cover strip door with an arched head, dating from around 1840. The tall cob walls contribute significantly to the local character of the East Town area of Crediton, particularly around the parish church.
