Description
Palace Cottage is a house dating from the 1830s, with parts likely from the 18th century or earlier at the rear. The exterior is stuccoed and features a gabled slate roof with end stacks that have rendered shafts and old pots. The rear block is mostly roughcast, likely cob, and shows remnants of old slate-hanging on the rear elevation.
The building has an L-plan layout with a rear left wing. The earlier section is a rear range that runs parallel to the main block and extends beyond it to the north. A single-storey lean-to has been added to fill the gap between the rear and main ranges.
The house is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay front, deep eaves supported by moulded eaves brackets, and painted rusticated quoins. A central Tuscan timber porch leads to the front door, which has panelled reveals and an overlight. There are two ground floor and three first floor 19th-century round-headed 12-pane sash windows with glazing bars. The right side of the building has a matching ground floor window. The rear left wing features a hipped roof at the end. The north end of the earlier range also has a hipped roof and overlooks Blagdon, with a carriage doorway beneath a loft door. The rear elevation of this range is partly slate-hung.
The interior was not inspected during the survey in 1990, but it is likely to contain 19th-century features in the main range. The rear range may be of considerable interest, as the site is reputed locally to be connected with the former collegiate buildings of the parish church.
