Description

Penton is a small villa built around 1820, which includes garden walls and a stable block added in the late 19th century. The main structure is made of roughcast cob with a hipped slate roof and has two rear stacks. The layout consists of a single depth, two rooms wide, with a central entrance. The ground slopes sharply to the east, where a lower block faces into a service yard. A front right wing features a monopitch roof and provides additional accommodation over a service room, possibly an old dairy, that also faces the service yard. The Victorian stable block runs parallel to this wing.

The exterior of Penton is two storeys high with an asymmetrical four-bay front that has regular window placement. To the left of the center is a four-panel front door, with the top panels glazed and featuring geometric glazing bars. There are two French windows on the left and one on the right, each with small panes and Gothick arched glazing bars at the top. The first floor has a 12-pane sash window to the left and two similar windows on the right, all with Gothick arched panes at the top. Above the front door is a six-pane casement window with similar Gothic detailing. The inner return of the wing is stuccoed, featuring deep eaves with a boarded soffit and paired eaves brackets. A four-bay verandah supported by cast iron columns has a lead tent roof, with a fifth similar bay at the south end return. The service yard is paved with pitched stone. The tall rendered garden walls to the south have tiled coping. Inside, original features include panelled doors and shutters.
