Description
The cider house, located approximately 3 metres east of Freathingcott Farmhouse, is likely from the 17th century and was refurbished in the mid-19th century. It is constructed from local stone rubble, featuring larger, more carefully-dressed quoins, and has a corrugated iron roof that was originally thatch. The building is situated on a hillslope, facing west towards Freathingcott Farmhouse, with an apple store located above.
The exterior includes a front doorway flanked by three-light casement windows, all showcasing 19th-century joinery details. The roof is tall and half-hipped at both ends. On the left (north) side, there is an external flight of steps leading to the loading hatch for the apple store. The interior has not been inspected but may contain some 17th-century carpentry. This cider house, along with other listed farm buildings in the area, forms a remarkable group of traditional farm structures that serve the nearby Freathingcott Farmhouse. The visual appeal of this group is further enhanced by its location on a steep hillslope.
