Description

This is a group of three pairs of semi-detached houses located on Frog Street, Bampton. They were built in 1924 by Petter and Warren, commissioned by Bampton Urban District Council. The construction utilizes roughcast brick cavity walls and a steel roof structure covered in curved corrugated iron sheets. The roof features coped segmental gable ends, with the central pair, numbers 29 and 31, having angular profile coped ends. Red brick axial stacks are also present.

The houses are two storeys high, with symmetrical two-window frontages on the northeast side, set within wide segmental gable ends. Later 20th-century three-light casement windows and glazed doors are located to the left and right of each front. The rear elevations are similar in design. The interiors have not been inspected.

These houses were designed as low-cost housing for the local council, drawing inspiration from the Nissen huts utilized by Lt Colonel Nissen of the Royal Engineers during the First World War. Similar council houses can be found in Yeovil, West Camel, and Barwick in South Somerset.
