Description
The Bampton War Memorial Cross is located at the junction of High Street and South Molton Road, within a circular enclosure that features railings at the rear and four posts with a spiked chain at the front. This memorial is made of rough-hewn Devon granite and stands approximately 3.5 meters tall. It rises from a tapering, square plinth that sits on a two-stepped base.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the plinth reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN SACRED MEMORY OF/ FORTY ONE PARISHIONERS/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919./ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN/ THAN THAT HE GIVETH HIS/ LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS./ (NAMES)." The names of those who served in the First World War are listed on either side of the plinth. Additionally, a later inscription on the front face of the upper step of the base reads "1939 – 1945/ (NAMES)."
In front of the memorial cross, there is a Victoria Cross tablet dedicated to Captain Anketell Moutray Read, which is set into the circular platform.
