Description

This building in the centre of Newton Square is a former manor court room, later converted into a shop with a library above. It likely dates from the 18th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 20th century. The construction is of stone rubble, topped with a slate roof, and includes a lateral stack on the left return. The building is small, with a one-room plan, gabled to face Newton Square. A flight of external stone steps originally led to the former manor room, where court leet meetings were held; these steps have since been enclosed. The ground floor now functions as a shop, and the first floor as a library. The symmetrical front facade features a slate plaque in the gable inscribed "Hon. Newton-Fellows, Lord of ye Hundred, 1798." The ground floor has a central round-headed doorway flanked by round-headed shop windows, while the first floor has a 12-pane sash window. Further sashes are present on the right return, one on the first floor and two on the ground floor. The interior has not been inspected. The building, located at the west end of the market infill, faces No. 11 across Newton Square and forms a significant element of the town centre.
