Description
This is a large house, dating from the mid to late 18th century with early 19th-century doorcases on Castle Street and a circa 1860s shop window. It has been subdivided into a shop, flats, and an adjoining house in Silver Street. The building is constructed of stone rubble with a slate roof. The ends of the roof are hipped, and there are stacks on the ends and along the central axis. No. 7 Silver Street is whitewashed and rendered with a gabled slate roof and end stacks.
The plan is in the shape of an 'L', with one range along Castle Street and an adjoining range at right angles to the right end on Silver Street. The main range appears to have been originally symmetrical, though the original entrance position is unclear. It is possible the original entrance was central, but the two early 19th-century doorcases to the right now mark the first and second bays from the right. A large, late 19th-century shop window has been inserted into the three left-hand bays on the ground floor.
The Castle Street range is three stories high, while the Silver Street range is two stories. The Castle Street façade has a grand seven-bay front with pilasters, with pilasters flanking the central bay, and two string courses. The ground floor symmetry has been altered with the addition of a pair of early 19th-century doorcases, featuring reeded pilasters and cornices. Above the ground floor are twelve-pane sashes to the centre and right-hand bays; the left-hand window on the first floor is a four-pane replacement, and the centre window is a two-light casement with glazing bars and margin glazing. The second floor has seven six-over-three-pane sashes. The interior was not inspected, but is believed to contain a good staircase.
The Silver Street range features a 19th-century panelled door with pilasters, a cornice, and a painted rectangular fanlight. To either side of the door are three-light 20th-century casements with segmental arches to the embrasurers. On the first floor is a round-headed sash with margin glazing above the front door. Either side, there are twelve-pane sashes.
