Description

Nos. 4-7 and 10-12, Greenway's Almshouses, consist of three blocks that are part of the Greenway's Almshouse Trust. The East and West blocks were built in 1838, while the South block was first constructed in 1889 and rebuilt in 2004; the South block is not included in this listing, nor is the 20th-century brick almshouse range attached to the East block.

The East and West blocks are made of local purple stone, featuring brick chimney stacks, natural slate roofs, and some cast-iron rainwater goods. They are arranged in parallel ranges facing each other from north to south.

Both the East and West blocks are two storeys high, each with seven bays. The ground floor has a central doorway, flanked by three bays on either side that include a door and windows. The first floor contains six windows. All timber casements and half-glazed entrance doors are 20th-century replacements. The original openings are topped with flat arches that have keystones. The West block features a central stone panel that states, "THESE ALMSHOUSES WERE BUILT A.D.1838 W HOLE & R BAKER WARDENS, J PERKINS & R SEWARD BUILDERS." Below this is another panel that reads, "GREENWAYS/ THESE ALMSHOUSES WITH/ WALDRONS AND SLEES/ WERE REMODELLED AND/ CONVERTED FROM ONE ROOM/ QUARTERS INTO FLATS/ 1952-1955." The pitched slate roofs are finished with brick ridge stacks. A two-storey extension was added to the East block in 1997, and a pair of two-storey extensions was added to the rear of the West block in 2000.

The interiors of all the ranges have been modernised and are now arranged as a mixture of flats and houses.
