Description

A group of farm buildings, dating to the 17th century with 19th-century alterations, consist of a barn, stables, and linhays situated approximately 8 metres north of Chaffcombe Farmhouse. The buildings are constructed of cob on rubble footings, with roofs of corrugated iron, corrugated asbestos, and slate. The range of farm buildings sits to the northern side of the farmyard, behind Chaffcombe Farmhouse.

The barn, at the left end and facing east, has a gable-ended corrugated iron roof. It has opposing doorways on its eastern side, leading to a threshing floor. The rear doorframe is original 17th-century oak, with a chamfered surround. A small plank door is located at the right end of the front elevation, and a narrow ventilator is high in the centre. The interior has plasterwork and a replacement 19th-century roof with king post trusses. The barn likely originally extended two bays further to the south.

The linhays, set at right angles to the barn, are divided into two sections. The larger, eight-bay section to the left has a slate roof, while the four-bay section to the right has a corrugated iron roof and a slightly different axis. They are separated by a full-height cob partition. The left section has a replacement 19th-century roof of king post trusses, and the right section retains the original 17th-century roof of A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars.

The stables, facing south-west, have a corrugated asbestos roof. The front elevation features a wide central doorway flanked by 20th-century iron-framed windows with glazing bars. The front is partially patched with 20th-century concrete blocks, and the first floor appears to have always been blind. The roof is gable-ended to the left and half-hipped to the right, with a first-floor loading bay in the right end wall. The interior has soffit-chamfered beams to the ground floor and a 17th-century A-frame roof with pegged lap-jointed collars.

The rear cob wall, which follows the three changes in angle of the linhays and stables, is blind and appears continuous, leading towards Chaffcombe Farmhouse.
