Description

The Mare headstone, located about 10 metres south-east of the chancel of the Church of St Michael and All Angels, is an early 19th-century stone headstone. It features a cranked head and bears an inscription commemorating John Mare, who was "late soldier in his majesty's first or royal dragoons and wounded at Waterloo." The headstone is decorated with a laurel wreath and a cutlass carved in relief, making it an interesting example of military trophies used to adorn a modest headstone.
