Description

This is a double barn located approximately 10 meters south of Widhayes Farmhouse, dating from the mid to late 17th century and refurbished in 1800. The barn is constructed of cob on stone rubble footings and features a corrugated iron roof, which was formerly thatch. It has a long plan on a roughly east-west axis, facing north into the farmyard, with two sets of full-height opposing doorways leading onto the threshing floors.

The exterior of the barn has a long front that includes two full-height doorways, each flanked by short projecting midstrey walls, with eaves extending down to form small hoods. The right double doorway is from the 20th century, while the rear doorway has the date 1800 painted on the inside. The left double doorway is likely contemporary and features the name R. Chave inscribed on one of the flaps, who died in 1827. Another flap shows the worn remains of an inscribed coat of arms. The rear double doorway here is also contemporary, and both double doorways from 1800 are split into flaps, retaining their original wrought iron and oak fittings. Additionally, the left (east) end wall has a contemporary door with a hayloft loading hatch above, while the right end has been repaired and altered with some 20th-century brick.

Inside, the barn is open to the roof, showcasing mid to late 17th-century tall A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars. This barn, along with the nearby linhay, is a particularly good example of traditional Devon farm buildings.
