Description
This is a farmhouse, originally likely three cottages, now a single house. Its core dates back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries, with alterations and extensions in the 18th century, followed by modernization in 1984. The main structure is plastered cob on rubble footings, with cob and stone walls. Brick stacks top the building, and the roof is thatched. It comprises a four-room main block facing south, with end stacks and a lateral stack projecting to the rear. A lower ancillary block is attached to the left (west) end, also with an end stack. The south front has an irregular arrangement of six 20th-century casement windows. Gabled roofs rise from the eaves over the first-floor windows at each end. Most of the original doors have been blocked, with two now at the front and one at the rear.
The interior has undergone considerable alteration, but retains features indicating an 18th-century single-room cottage added to the right (east) of a former three-room block. The central room features a late 16th to early 17th-century chamfered crossbeam with run-out stops, and a contemporary volcanic stone fireplace. The left room has a 16th-century chamfered crossbeam with cut-diagonal stops; a small, 17th-century two-light oak window with a chamfered mullion to the rear; and a volcanic stone fireplace. The roof has 17th or 18th-century A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars. The western ancillary block contains a fireplace but was largely rebuilt in 1984. A painted wooden board on a rear wall near the road bears a notice from 1907, declaring that strangers have no right to use the 'Common Moore' and that legal action will be taken against those who disturb the Commoners.
