Description

This is a range of three cottages at 7, 9 and 11 Briton Street, Bampton. The building likely has origins in the 17th century or earlier, with alterations in the 18th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of whitewashed and rendered stone rubble, with a slate roof featuring gabled ends and two rear lateral brick stacks with stone shafts, along with an axial stack. The original plan consisted of a single-depth three-room layout, with a through passage, the lower end being to the left. A single-storey rear lean-to is positioned centrally to the rear and a wing extends at right angles to the lower end. The range has been subdivided into three cottages; number 7 represents the lower end and passage, number 9 the hall, and number 11 the inner room. The front elevation is asymmetrical, with four window bays. A front door is set into the passage to the left of centre. There's a door into the inner room to the right and a direct entry into the hall in the centre. The windows are 20th-century 2-light timber casements with two panes per light. The interior of number 9 was inspected and features a single cross beam and a half beam with chamfers and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. It has an open fireplace with stone jambs and a chamfered timber lintel. The 18th-century roof trusses show evidence of charring, possibly from a previous thatch fire. The interiors of numbers 7 and 9 were not inspected, but interesting features may remain.
