Description
This barn, located approximately 3 metres northeast of Court Hall Farmhouse, dates from the late 17th century to the 18th century. It is constructed of local stone rubble and has a corrugated iron roof, which was formerly thatch. The barn was originally a double threshing barn, now used for storage, and is a long structure facing the entrance courtyard to the southwest. It once contained two threshing barns of similar size, separated by a full-height stone wall, with threshing floors on either side. Most of the main doorways have been blocked, but originally there were central full-height doorways leading to the threshing floors. The right doorway is weatherboarded, while the left is partly blocked with stone rubble and a shallow projecting bay. Current doorways include a small one near the right end and a garage doorway near the left end, both dating from the 19th or 20th century. Under the eaves of the left section, there are rows of pigeon holes with projecting landing shelves below. The roof is gable-ended. Inside, each barn is open to the roof; the right barn features A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars and butt purlins, while the left barn has similar trusses with spiked and pegged lap-jointed collars and trenched purlins. This barn is part of an attractive group associated with Court Hall Farmhouse.
