Description

Waterslade Cottage is a cottage built in the late 17th century to early 18th century, which underwent thorough renovation around 1980. It is constructed from plastered stone rubble, and its original stacks have been demolished and replaced with 20th-century concrete blocks. The cottage features a thatched roof and has a three-room layout facing south. However, the left end room serves as a store and is open to the roof, meaning the main living area has a two-room plan with a central entrance and staircase situated between the two rooms. Each of these rooms has an outer end stack.

The exterior showcases a symmetrical two-window front, featuring aluminium framed casements from around 1980, arranged around a central front doorway that includes a 19th-century plank door behind a 20th-century thatch-roofed porch supported by rustic posts. There is also a third aluminium window on the ground floor to the left. The roof is hipped at the left end and gable-ended on the right.

Inside, the cottage was nearly completely rebuilt around 1980, showcasing plain carpentry and joinery details. However, the roof retains its late 17th to early 18th-century character, featuring a series of A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars. Waterslade Cottage is part of an attractive group with the nearby Waterslade Farmhouse.
