Description

Walkeys Cottage is a cottage that dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with possible origins in the late 17th century to early 18th century. It was modernised in 1987 and is constructed of plastered stone rubble, with stone rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick and a thatch roof. The cottage has a three-room layout facing north, featuring a parlour at the left (east) end and a kitchen at the right end, both served by gable-end stacks. The doorway, which likely once led into a passage, now enters directly into the kitchen, while there is an unheated central service room. Although the cottage appears to be from the late 18th to early 19th century, the layout indicates a central service room plan typical of the late 17th to early 18th century.

The exterior features a regular but not symmetrical three-window front with 20th-century replacement casements, all having round heads, and the first-floor windows are adorned with thatch eyebrows. The front doorway is positioned to the right of centre and has a round-headed arch that contains a late 18th to early 19th-century plank door. A gabled slate-roofed porch, built in 1987, features a round-headed arch with a plank door that imitates the original door behind it. The main roof is gable-ended. The interior was not available for inspection during the survey, but some plain late 18th to early 19th-century carpentry details were observed. The kitchen fireplace, made of stone rubble with an oak lintel, includes an oven and may be earlier than the rest of the cottage.
