Description
Nos. 2, 3, and 4 are three cottages that were originally a single house, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, with modernisations and extensions from the 18th and 19th centuries. The buildings are constructed of plastered cob and rubble, with some brickwork from the 19th and 20th centuries; they have cob or stone stacks topped with brick, and a thatched roof that has been partly replaced with concrete tiles on the left side. The original layout was a three-room plan with a through passage, and the inner room is located in No. 2.
The cottages are two storeys high, featuring brick gable stacks and a large projecting lateral stack made of brick above the eaves at the front of the hall (No. 3). The front has five windows, which are 19th and 20th century casements of irregular sizes and placements, some of which have glazing bars. The first-floor window to the left of the stack has two lights with twelve small square panes per casement. There is a door to No. 3, located to the right of the stack, leading into the through passage. Immediately to the right is an inserted 19th-century door to No. 4, which has a 20th-century porch with a monopitch roof made of corrugated iron.
Inside, the cottages have largely 19th-century fittings, so many early features are not visible. However, an oak plank and muntin screen is exposed on the lower side of the passage, with 16th-century framing above, which now serves as the party wall between Nos. 3 and 4. In No. 4, the side-pegged, jointed cruck roof is exposed, and the hall features an axial 17th-century beam that is chamfered with scroll stops. The 19th-century additions to the rear of No. 2 are not included in this description.
