Description

Shobrooke House School is a former vicarage, originally built in 1784 and remodeled in the mid-19th century. The building features roughcast on brick or rubble with exposed brick stacks beneath a slate roof. The main block is square in plan, two rooms deep, and two storeys high, topped with parallel roofs that are hipped at each end. An ancillary two-storey block projects to the east, continuing the pitch of the rear roof. The house faces south, with the main entrance located on the west side.

The south front of the main block has three bays, with the center section slightly projecting forward. This section contains a single-storey bay window with canted sides and French windows on the ground floor. Above, there is a tripartite sash window with a central segmental head. The timber sashes have six panels per sash on each floor, flanking the projecting center. All windows retain the remains of runners for sliding shutters. The building features deep projecting eaves with shaped brackets around all sides. The ancillary block has two sashes on the first floor only.

The west front has three windows with 12-pane sashes and a central roughcast porch that includes a six-panel door beneath a rectangular fan with an unusual flowing pattern of glazing bars. The rear of the building displays irregular fenestration. A door is set in the middle of the main block, leading to the stairs, and is topped by a high round-headed timber sash with margin lights and original glass, flanked by narrow sashes with four panes per sash on each floor. There is also a tripartite sash window in the kitchen on the left. The interior retains the original stair and other fittings.
