Description
White Cottage is a small house dating from the mid to late 16th century, located in the village of Little Silver, Shobrooke. The house is built on rubble footings with plaster-covered cob walls, and has volcanic stone and brick stacks and a slate roof that was originally thatched. It has a two-room and through-passage plan.
The building adjoins number 20, The Village, to the east, and the gable end to the west includes a small 19th-century chimney serving the first floor. A large stone chimney stack from the 16th century projects to the front of the hall and incorporates a damaged and illegible Beerstone date plaque towards the top. The front facade has a three-window arrangement of 20th-century casement windows, with a passage door immediately to the right of the stack. Inside, there is an original 16th-century oak plank and muntin screen separating the passage from the hall. The hall features a large stone fireplace with a replacement oak lintel, and a cob-walled stair turret projects to the back. The roof is a side-pegged jointed cruck roof. A coin from the reign of Charles II, found above the passage screen, is believed to date the flooring of the hall. A 19th-century brick party wall is shared with number 20, The Village.
