Description
Nos 225 and 226 on High Street are a notable building, reputedly built in 1567, and possibly dating from that time. The structure features a five-storey carved timber front with overhanging storeys and two gables. The ground floor is not original, and the third and fourth floors have undergone significant restoration. The first and second floors showcase five-sided oriel windows supported by elaborately carved brackets, with continuous windows in between. While all timbers are exposed and many are carved, much of the woodwork has been restored. The building was associated with Simon Snow, a merchant, Member of Parliament, and Mayor in 1653. In 1971, the building was entirely rebuilt behind its restored facade, and it now has a modern shop front.
