Description
The Devon County War Memorial, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, was completed in 1921 and is made of Haytor granite. It features three stone steps leading to a rectangular plinth, which is topped by a three-tiered rectangular base. This base transitions via spurs into a lozenge-shaped tapered shaft, crowned with a contemporary chamfered cross. The central tier of the base bears the inscription: 'THE COUNTY/OF/DEVON/TO/HER GLORIOUS DEAD/1914-1919/TE DEUM LAUDAMUS/1939-1945'.
The Processional Way, designed by Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe in 1974, consists of a granite-paved forecourt located at the west end of the cathedral. It includes diminishing stone steps that vary in width and height, lined with a pebble gully, leading up to a platform on the north side of the war memorial.
