Description
The Deanery is a Grade II* listed building located in Cathedral Close, dating from the 15th century, although it is built on the site of the Nunnery of St Augustine. The building features a chapel from the same period, which has undergone significant restoration. The Great Hall, situated at the southwest end, is a two-storey stone structure with round-headed windows. These windows originally contained 18th-century Peckett glass but were severely damaged on May 4, 1942. The lower room dates from the 16th or early 17th century and retains contemporary panelling, a plaster frieze, and a ceiling. A fireplace in the dining room was relocated from a now-demolished house known as the Chantry. The northeast end of the house has been largely modernized. The building is constructed from a mix of materials, including red brick and Heavitree stone, with slate and tile roofs. The Great Hall features an arch-braced timber roof with four bays and a minstrel's gallery. There are additional notable features from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, all of which were restored in 1973. The Deanery is part of a group of listed buildings in Cathedral Close.
