Description

This is a schoolhouse dating from the 1850s. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with stone and brick dressings, and has a slate roof. It exhibits modest Gothic Revival detailing.

The schoolroom is oriented so that its west gable faces The Mint, and its long north side faces a courtyard. This courtyard is also defined by a house, likely converted from medieval ranges of St Nicholas’ Priory (21 The Mint), and a Romanesque Revival Roman Catholic chapel (22 The Mint). The schoolroom is rectangular, with 20th-century toilet blocks added to its east end. A doorway provides access from The Mint, and a second doorway, probably converted from a window, is situated on the north side, facing the courtyard towards the east.

The west end of the building has deep verges with decorative bargeboards, and a four-centred arched stone doorway with a two-leaf plank and cover strip door. Above the doorway is a three-light Gothic Revival window with square leaded panes and a quatrefoil in the gable. The east end, facing the courtyard, features a three-light segmental-headed arched window and a quatrefoil in the gable, with matching curly bargeboards. The north side has four windows with nine panes to each, one of which has been converted into a doorway.

Inside, the schoolroom has four king-post and strut roof trusses.

A red brick coped wall, dating from the 19th century or earlier, connects the west gable of the schoolhouse to the west gable of No. 21, incorporating a gateway into the courtyard with square gatepiers. This wall is included in the listing.

The building is principally included for its contribution to the group value of the buildings along The Mint.
