Description
This building, located at 5 Church Street, is a house with a shop on the ground floor, dating from the early 19th century. It features mass wall construction that is unpainted, stuccoed, and blocked out, topped with a slate roof. The rendered chimney shafts have tapering round terracotta chimneypots, and there are cast iron rainwater goods.
The house has a double depth plan and is one room wide, with rooms heated by a chimneystack at the left end. It stands three storeys tall and has deep boxed eaves supported by paired eaves brackets. The front has a regular two-window arrangement. The shop front, a 20th-century addition, features a moulded cornice and fascia, with shop windows that have glazing bars and are canted into a central 20th-century half-glazed shop door. To the right, there is a two-leaf door with fielded panels that leads to the accommodation above, while the first and second floors have 12-pane hornless boxed sash windows.
Inside, the original staircase and a marble chimneypiece can be found on the first floor. The owner has reported that the current shop front is a late 20th-century copy of the original, which was destroyed by fire. Additionally, two brick ovens were uncovered below ground floor level at the rear, now located beneath a shed or workshop.
