Description
Holy Well is an early 19th-century structure, possibly designed by Cockrell, located 350 metres along the lane to Frogmore from the B3176. It is built from ashlar volcanic trap, known as Killerton stone. The well is set into the hillside and features a stone wellhouse. The face of the wellhouse includes a string-course that incorporates two orders of a Norman arch, with the inner order forming the capital. The outer order has cushion capitals. A revetment extends forward from the well to the right, which once served as the pathway from the road above, although it is now much overgrown. The Romanesque Revival style of Cockrell's work at nearby Killerton is reminiscent of this structure.
