Description

Keeper's Cottage is a former farmhouse, dating back to the 17th century, likely built on the site of an earlier medieval house. The walls are plastered cob set on stone foundations, and the roof is concrete tiled, with a gabled end on the left and a hipped end on the right. The house originally had a cross-passage plan, with the service rooms located to the right of the central passage. There are external brick chimney stacks, one on the left-hand side and another at the rear of the hall. The front of the cottage has been substantially altered in the late 20th century, with new windows. Originally, there were two windows on the upper floor under eyebrow eaves, and four on the ground floor. A lean-to porch with an open slate roof extends from the front. Inside, the hall features a chamfered ceiling cross beam with run-out stops, and a fireplace with a chamfered wooden jamb, another jamb potentially concealed. The roof structure consists of four jointed crucks with 17th-century crossed and pegged apex carpentry, and a significant number of reused smoke-blackened timbers, including the ridge piece.
