Description
Saxons is a small cottage dating from the mid to late 19th century, which was modernised around 1980. It is constructed of plastered cob and stone rubble, with a stone rubble stack topped with 19th-century brick, and features a thatched roof. The cottage has a small two-room plan and faces northeast. The larger room on the left (southeast) side has a gable-end stack. It is two storeys tall, with a single-storey extension added to the left end in 1980.
The exterior has a symmetrical two-window front with 20th-century casements that include glazing bars. The smaller first-floor windows are adorned with thatch eyebrows. The central doorway features a 20th-century two-flap door and is sheltered by a contemporary shingle-roofed porch. The roof is hipped at both ends. Inside, there is plain carpentry detail where it is exposed. Saxons is part of a charming group of small thatch-roofed cottages at Knowle Cross, but it is the only cottage in the group not shown on the 1845 parish tithe map.
