Description
Sowton Lodge is a former lodge to Bishop's Court, built in 1834. It is constructed of snecked limestone and features a gabled-end and hipped slate roof. The building has a single-depth plan with two cross wings, each containing a principal room on either side of a central recessed doorway. The rear lateral stacks provide heating for each room, with the left stack featuring a hall polygonal shelf and the right stack having a conventional brick shaft.
The front of the lodge is symmetrical, with two flanking cross wings that have gabled-end roofs adorned with wavy bargeboarding and an apex pendant. There is a single lancet window with a hood mould. The main roof extends to form a veranda over the central entrance, supported by two posts. Each room is illuminated at either end by a two-light casement window with a chamfered stone surround, set beneath a gabled-end projection that also has wavy bargeboarding.
