Description

The main chest tomb, located approximately 18 metres south of the tower of the Church of St Michael in Otterton, is a Grade II listed structure dated 1770. It commemorates John and Agnes Main and is made of limestone ashlar. The tomb features a flat lid with a moulded edge, resting on a moulded plinth. Each long side has two panels separated by a fluted flat pilaster, with similar clasping pilasters at each corner. The northern panels are inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering. The left panel notes the deaths of John and Agnes Main in 1763 and 1770, while the right panel lists the deaths of other family members from the late 18th century and early 19th century.
